If you’re one for grand gestures, a stocking may also be the perfect place to hide a luxe gift like a diamond tennis bracelet or designer passport holder (perhaps with a plane ticket inside). There are sweet treats, like a favorite chocolate bar, a teeny-tiny speaker, and even a hand cream that can all be stuffed into a stocking together, happily awaiting their chances to be unwrapped. The size constraints of a stocking can make room for some big surprises. While there’s no chance that a car or TV could be tucked into this oversized sock, it can be a great place to stash small-but-mighty gifts. Whether velvet or knit, minimalist or monogrammed, small or large-the stocking has traditionally been a place to put an orange along with other small trinkets. Not to be overlooked are the stockings hung on the fireplace (or where there isn’t a fireplace, tacked to the wall or mounted from a bookshelf). For those who celebrate Christmas, once December 25 arrives, all of the attention goes to the stack of foil-wrapped presents tucked under the tree.
